Lavi Fair in Shimla ends, losing out to online shopping trends

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh): The rhythmic beat of drums and the call of trumpets once again echoed through the narrow lanes of Rampur as the historic Lavi Fair came to a close. Vendors had lined up their stalls, showcasing vibrant Kinnauri caps, handcrafted woollens, and traditional attire. However, despite the festive atmosphere, the fair, once a major trade hub in Himachal Pradesh, struggled to attract the crowds it once commanded.

Tracing its origins to the 17th century, the Lavi Fair was historically a key marketplace, with Rampur, situated at the border of what is now Tibet , thriving as a major trade route. For generations, the fair served as a bustling exchange for dry fruits, Kinnauri textiles, and traditional handicrafts. Yet, in recent years, the rise of technology, e-commerce platforms, and door-to-door delivery services has severely impacted foot traffic, leaving the fair in decline.

Local artisans fear that without changes, the fair may soon fade into history, reduced to little more than a formality.
