Jharkhand's iconic Kesariya Kalakand gets GI tag

Koderma's renowned Kesariya Kalakand has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, giving Jharkhand's iconic sweet a stronger identity and opening opportunities in national and international markets. The recognition makes Kesariya Kalakand the first food product from Jharkhand to receive the prestigious GI tag.

The celebrated delicacy, prepared using milk, khoya and saffron, traces its origins to the Bhatia family, who migrated to India from Pakistan after Partition. Its journey began nearly six decades ago and reached a major milestone in 2026 with the GI recognition. Nearly 14 litres of milk are required to prepare just four kilograms of Kesariya Kalakand, reflecting the craftsmanship behind every batch.

Local sweet shop owners say customers now specifically ask for the GI-tagged Kesariya Kalakand, while residents believe the recognition will protect its authenticity from imitations. The GI tag is anticipated to enhance the identity of Jharkhand's rich culinary legacy and open up new business prospects for regional producers in addition to protecting a beloved culinary tradition.
