Meet Andhra Pradesh's 83-member joint family living together across six generations under one roof

As nuclear families become increasingly common across India, one extraordinary household in Andhra Pradesh is keeping the centuries-old joint family tradition alive. In Kurlapalli village of Anantapur district, the Nagappa family lives together with 83 members spanning six generations, making it one of India's rarest and largest joint families.

Although they occupy four adjoining houses, the family functions as a single household, sharing meals, income, responsibilities, and everyday life. Family elders say the tradition has continued since their forefathers, surviving financial hardships through unity and mutual support. Differences of opinion are inevitable in such a large family, but elders ensure every disagreement is settled before the day ends.

With 14 daughters-in-law, six sisters, and children from six generations living under one roof, the Nagappa family believes respect, cooperation, and strong family values are the secret to their happiness. Their remarkable lifestyle stands as an inspiring example of togetherness in modern India.
