Who is Jatayu in the 'Ramayana'? The story behind Kerala’s 70-foot sculpture

The new Jatayu poster from Namit Malhotra’s ‘Ramayana’, featuring the voice of Anupam Kher, has brought attention to one of the epic’s most courageous characters. In Kerala, a giant sculpture inspired by the legendary bird offers visitors an opportunity to explore the story beyond the pages of the ancient epic.
The ‘Ramayana’ is filled with stories of courage, sacrifice and devotion. Among its many memorable characters is Jatayu, the noble bird who risks his life to stop Ravana from abducting Sita. Despite his age and the strength of his opponent, Jatayu chooses to fight rather than watch the abduction unfold.
Although he fails to rescue Sita, his sacrifice becomes a crucial moment in Rama’s search for his wife.
Who Is Jatayu In The Ramayana?
Jatayu is a noble bird, often depicted as a vulture or a large eagle-like creature, in the ‘Ramayana’. He is associated with Aruna, the charioteer of the Sun god Surya, and is described as a friend of King Dasharatha, the father of Lord Rama.
Jatayu’s most significant role comes when Ravana abducts Sita and carries her towards Lanka in the Pushpaka Vimana. Witnessing the abduction, the ageing bird confronts Ravana in an attempt to rescue her.
The two engage in a fierce battle in the sky. Despite his determination, Jatayu is overpowered by Ravana, who inflicts fatal injuries on him before continuing towards Lanka. Severely wounded and with his wings cut off, Jatayu falls to the ground.

According to the tradition associated with the legend, Jatayu falls at Chadayamangalam in present-day Kollam district, Kerala. When Rama and Lakshmana set out to find Sita, they come across the dying bird. Before succumbing to his injuries, Jatayu tells Rama about Ravana’s abduction and provides crucial information that helps the brothers continue their search.
Though Jatayu cannot prevent Sita’s abduction, his willingness to confront Ravana makes him a symbol of courage, loyalty and self-sacrifice. His actions also demonstrate that heroism in the ‘Ramayana’ extends beyond its central warriors.
Jatayu Earth’s Center: The Kerala Destination Inspired By The Ramayana
For those interested in exploring places associated with the ‘Ramayana’, Jatayu Earth’s Center in Chadayamangalam, Kollam district, offers a destination inspired by the legend. Also known as Jatayu Nature Park or Jatayu Rock, the eco-tourism project was developed by sculptor and filmmaker Rajiv Anchal and his team.
The centre is known for its monumental Jatayu sculpture, which measures around 70 feet in height and sits atop a rocky hill. The sculpture commemorates the bird’s legendary attempt to save Sita and has become a prominent attraction in Kerala.
The destination combines the mythological narrative with tourism experiences. Visitors can explore a museum and watch an audio-visual presentation recounting Jatayu’s story. The hilltop sculpture can be accessed by cable car or by taking a walking route across the rocky terrain.
The site also features a small water body near the sculpture, which local legend associates with Jatayu. According to the belief, the bird struck the rock with its beak to create a source of water and survived by drinking from it until Rama arrived. A footprint attributed to Lord Rama is also preserved near the sculpture.
