Kerala CM and family enjoy 'Empuraan' in theatre amid raging controversy

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with his family, attended the screening of the film Empuraan on Saturday evening at 6 PM, at the PVR Cinemas in Lulu Mall, Thiruvananthapuram. The fact that the Chief Minister visited the cinema to watch the film has drawn attention, especially given the ongoing controversies surrounding the movie.

Released on March 27, Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj and starring Mohanlal, has been at the centre of significant criticism from pro-Hindutva groups. Several BJP workers took to social media to voice their opposition to the film, with allegations that the content of the movie was deeply ‘hurtful’. The criticism stemmed from concerns that RSS nominees in the CBFC had failed to discharge their duties properly, in demanding the ‘cuts’ during the original censoring process.

Amid these controversies, the film will now be screened with as many as 17 'edits' and some dialogues muted. These changes were made after widespread protests, with the producers of the film themselves requesting the modifications. The revised version of the movie is set to hit theatres on Wednesday.
