From Sukumaran and Tanuja to Prithviraj and Kajol – A generational shift spanning over four decades

Bollywood's upcoming release Sarzameen, featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kajol in lead roles, is set to premiere on July 25 via JioHotstar. The film’s teaser and trailer have already generated a strong buzz, with audiences eager to see their favourite artists on the screen.
Interestingly, film critic Sebastian Xavier pointed out a delightful piece of cinematic trivia connecting the lead actors on the Facebook page M3DB. Prithviraj's father, the late Malayalam actor Sukumaran, and Kajol's mother, Bollywood actor Tanuja Mukherjee, once shared the screen in the 1980 Malayalam film Thaliritta Kinakkal. Over four decades later, their children are coming together as lead actors in Sarzameen, marking a rare intergenerational reunion in Indian cinema.
“In 1980, Thaliritta Kinakkal starred Sukumaran as the male lead alongside Bollywood actor Tanuja. Now, 45 years later, Sarzameen will see Sukumaran’s son Prithviraj and Tanuja’s daughter Kajol in leading roles. It's a fascinating convergence of two generations of cinematic legacy.”
Set against the backdrop of Kashmir, Sarzameen explores the emotional fractures within a strained father-son relationship. The film’s trailer hints at underlying tension and complex family dynamics, with Kajol’s character caught in the middle of their conflict.
The film which also stars Ibrahim Ali Khan is directed by Kayoze Irani, son of actor Boman Irani, and produced by Dharma Productions in collaboration with Star Studios. Producers include Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Adar Poonawalla.
The screenplay is written by Soumil Shukla, Kauasar Munir and Arun Singh, with Kamaljeet Negi handling cinematography. With considerable pre-release hype, it remains to be seen whether the film proves a winner on OTT.
