Magical May for Munnar: More than 1 lakh tourists flock to the town

Munnar has witnessed a record increase in the number of tourists in the month of May. Though the holiday season had started, it was not very busy until mid-April. The surge began after the completion of elections in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The introduction of e-pass at tourist spots in Tamil Nadu also contributed to the rise in tourists to Munnar.

Popular locations such as Munnar, Mattupetty, Kundala, and Eravikulam saw a notable increase in footfalls. The Government Botanical Garden in Munnar alone welcomed around 100,200 visitors in May, a significant increase from the previous year's less than 70,000 visitors.

Eravikulam National Park, known for its natural habitat of Nilgiri Tahr, experienced a record-breaking 105,000 visitors in May, surpassing the previous record of 83,000 visitors during the Neelakurinji season in August 2006. Though 2880 visitors would be allowed to visit the park daily, due to the uncontrolled flow of visitors the number was increased to accommodate more tourists.

Around half a lakh people visited the Lakkom Waterfalls on the Munnar-Marayoor route. Tourist attractions such as Hydel Park, Mattupetty, and Kundala Boating Point experienced high demand, with visitors waiting in line for hours to enjoy boating.
