Kasaragod: In a major boost to the dairy sector of Kerala’s hill-bordering Parappa block, the Paalaazhi Project, a comprehensive dairy development initiative, was officially launched under the leadership of the Department of Animal Husbandry.

Parappa Block Panchayat, which earlier received national recognition as the Best Aspirational Block from the Central Government, is spearheading this initiative as a follow-up to its ongoing development efforts under the Aspirational Block Programme, as directed by the Kasaragod district administration.

Boost income and milk production for dairy farmers

The primary objective of the Paalaazhi Project is to address key challenges faced by the dairy sector and to enhance both milk production and the income of dairy farmers. Alongside the Animal Husbandry Department, several key institutions will collaborate in implementing the project, including the Dairy Development Department, Dairy Cooperative Societies, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, the National Dairy Research Institute (Karnal), NABARD, and the Kerala Livestock Development Board.

Project highlights: From animal health surveys to sex-sorted semen distribution

The project covers a wide range of interventions, from a complete livestock health survey to the introduction of sex-sorted semen, which ensures the birth of female calves. Other measures include supplying high-genetic-quality semen for artificial insemination and promoting fodder grass cultivation suited to local cattle.

The initial phase will kick off with a three-day health survey, where 41 dairy co-operative societies will act as sampling hubs. Temporary laboratories are being set up in Parappa to handle the collected samples. In addition to animal health data, socio-economic details of farmers will also be collected to better tailor support mechanisms.

Free sex-sorted semen doses for farmers

One of the project’s standout features is the provision of sex-sorted semen doses which ensure the birth of female calves, free of cost to dairy farmers. Each panchayat within the block will receive 300 doses from the Kerala Livestock Development Board, with a total allocation of ₹10.5 lakh for this component.

To ensure proper utilisation, technical infrastructure is being set up at local veterinary hospitals and sub-centres. Training sessions for both farmers and department officials are also scheduled during the project period.

Fodder development plans

To promote self-sufficiency in cattle feed, micro-level fodder planning will be encouraged at individual farm levels, while macro-level fodder development will be undertaken through co-operative societies. The aim is to establish fodder banks across the block to support consistent feed availability.

The Palazhi Project, designed to operate for one year, is expected to transform Parappa block’s dairy sector into a more scientific, modern, and profitable enterprise. Officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry are expecting the project will mark a step forward in dairy production.
