Attention YouTubers: New age limits could disable your live streams; Check updated policies

YouTube is set to implement major changes to its live streaming policies, with a particular focus on enhancing child safety. Effective July 22, 2025, the minimum age required for creators to livestream independently on the platform will be raised to 16 years old.
The new policy states that channels wishing to livestream must meet this updated age requirement. For live streams featuring individuals between 13 and 15 years old, it will now be mandatory for an adult to be "visibly accompanied" in the stream. Non-compliance with this rule may result in the live chat feature being disabled for the stream, and the associated account could temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. YouTube further warns that, in the future, such non-compliant live streams may be taken down, potentially leading to a temporary loss of live streaming ability for the account.
For creators under 16 who wish to participate in live streams from an adult's account, YouTube suggests that the adult be granted access to the minor's channel as an editor, manager, or owner. This allows the adult to initiate the live stream from the minor's channel, reaching their intended audience. It's crucial, however, that the adult remains visibly present and actively engaged in the live stream, signifying co-creation.
Beyond the age mandate, YouTube is also emphasizing best practices for minors participating in live streams to ensure their safety. These guidelines encourage young creators to:
- Maintain Privacy: Avoid sharing personal details like full name, age, address, school, or phone number, and be mindful of background elements that could reveal location.
- Utilize Privacy Settings: Work with a parent or trusted adult to configure content privacy and embed settings.
- Ensure Adult Awareness: Always have an adult nearby or informed about live streaming activities, ideally in the same room.
- Moderate Live Chat: Use YouTube's moderation tools, or designate a trusted adult as a moderator, to filter inappropriate comments. Users are advised to stop streams immediately and inform an adult if they feel uncomfortable.
- Keep it Positive: Focus on positive and fun content, avoiding private discussions, arguments, or inappropriate language, as live content can be widely seen and recorded.
YouTube reiterated that a channel's live streaming ability can be temporarily or permanently disabled for various reasons beyond age restrictions, including Community Guidelines strikes, copyright infringements, or matching copyrighted live broadcasts. Channels with numerous videos that have disabled features may also lose live streaming functionality. Additionally, streams suggesting violations of Community Guidelines or depicting someone handling firearms are subject to removal and potential live-streaming restrictions. For "Made for Kids" content, features like live chat, comments, and personalized ads will be disabled or restricted.
