WhatsApp rolls out major update: Missed call notes, AI images & more

Popular social media messaging application WhatsApp has unveiled a new wave of features just in time for the holiday rush, introducing smarter calling options, enhanced status tools, and powerful AI upgrades designed to make communication faster, richer, and more creative for users worldwide.
Missed call messages
One of the standout updates is the introduction of missed call messages, allowing users to instantly send a voice or video note when their call goes unanswered. The feature works based on the type of call and aims to offer a smoother alternative to traditional voicemail, especially useful as call volumes spike during the festive season.
WhatsApp is also improving real-time interactions during calls.
Voice chats now support live reactions, enabling participants to send quick emoji-style responses without breaking the conversation flow.
In group video calls, a new speaker spotlight will automatically highlight whoever is talking, making it easier to follow discussions in large groups.
Meta AI gets a boost with new image generation tools
WhatsApp is pushing deeper into artificial intelligence with upgrades powered by advanced models from Midjourney and Flux. Users can now generate high-quality, customised images, including festive greetings, directly through Meta AI within the app.
Another addition is AI-driven photo animation, which transforms static pictures into short videos that can be shared in chats or posted as Status updates.
For desktop users, WhatsApp is launching a new unified media tab on Mac, Windows, and Web that gathers all images, videos, links, and documents in one place, making file management significantly more convenient. The platform has also refreshed link previews to keep chats cleaner and less cluttered.
New status stickers
Status updates are receiving a creative boost with a new collection of stickers, including:
Interactive elements
Music lyric templates
Question prompts
Users can now post questions directly on Status and let their viewers respond, increasing engagement among contacts.
For channels, WhatsApp is giving admins more control and interaction capabilities. Admins can now pose real-time questions to followers, helping broadcasters collect instant feedback and create more dynamic content streams.
