India’s 100 million weekly ChatGPT users trigger massive AI expansion; Details inside

In a major boost to India’s artificial intelligence ambitions, Tata Group has partnered with OpenAI to develop advanced AI infrastructure and expand access to cutting-edge technology across the country.
The collaboration was announced at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled the nationwide “OpenAI for India” initiative. The programme aims to build AI capabilities in India by focusing on infrastructure development, enterprise adoption, workforce upskilling and local partnerships.
India has quickly become one of OpenAI’s largest user bases, with more than 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT, including students, teachers, developers and entrepreneurs. The new initiative seeks to accelerate this momentum and strengthen India’s growing AI ecosystem.
Altman said the goal is to create AI solutions “with India, for India, and in India,” highlighting the country’s strong tech talent pool, supportive government policies and rapid AI adoption.
As part of OpenAI’s global Stargate initiative, Tata Group and OpenAI will jointly develop AI-ready data centre infrastructure within India. The move is designed to ensure data residency, enhance security and build long-term domestic AI capabilities.
Under the partnership, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) will provide data centre capacity through its HyperVault business. OpenAI will become the first customer, starting with 100 megawatts of capacity, with plans to scale up to 1 gigawatt over time.
This infrastructure will allow OpenAI’s most advanced AI models to operate securely within India, reducing latency and meeting compliance requirements for enterprise and government workloads.
Tata Group also plans to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce over the coming years. The deployment will begin with hundreds of thousands of TCS employees, potentially making it one of the largest enterprise AI implementations globally.
In addition, TCS intends to integrate OpenAI’s Codex tools to standardise AI-driven software development practices across teams, helping accelerate AI-native innovation.
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, described the collaboration as a significant milestone in India’s ambition to become a global AI leader. The partnership aims to empower India’s youth with AI skills while transforming industries through advanced digital capabilities.
With the “OpenAI for India” initiative, the two organisations are positioning India as a key hub in the global AI landscape, combining infrastructure, innovation and talent to shape the future of democratic AI at scale.
