Using a shared Netflix account? A new login feature is rolling out

Netflix users who share an account with family members or housemates may soon notice a new prompt asking them to connect an email address to their individual profile. The update is designed to give profile owners more control over their Netflix experience, but it is also raising questions about account sharing, privacy and future access.
Netflix has started rolling out a new profile management feature that allows individual profiles within a subscription to be linked to separate email addresses. The change, which began appearing for users in mid-June, marks a shift from Netflix's existing setup, where all profiles are connected solely to the primary account holder's email.
For millions of users who access Netflix through a shared household account, the update could make logging in and managing profile settings much easier.
Why is Netflix asking for an email address on a profile?
Under the new system, profile owners can attach their own email address to a Netflix profile without becoming the main account holder. This means users will be able to receive sign-in verification codes directly, eliminating the need to contact the account owner when logging in on a new device.
The feature also gives profile users more control over personal settings, including language preferences, subtitle options, audio selections and other profile-specific customisations.
Netflix says recommendations and viewing suggestions will continue to be based on each profile's individual watch history.
Will Netflix account sharing be affected?
The update does not introduce new restrictions on account sharing, nor does it replace Netflix's existing household-sharing policies.
However, industry observers see the move as another step in Netflix's broader effort to create clearer identities for individual users within shared subscriptions. Since launching its password-sharing crackdown in 2023, the streaming platform has steadily introduced features aimed at distinguishing one user from another on the same account.
By linking profiles to unique email addresses, Netflix can allow users to manage their own profile access while maintaining tighter account administration.
How to add an email address to your Netflix profile
Users who have access to the feature can add an email address through the Profile Settings section of their Netflix account. Some subscribers may also receive a notification from Netflix containing a direct link to complete the process.
The rollout is being introduced gradually and may not be immediately available to every subscriber.
While many users have welcomed the added convenience, others have voiced concerns about privacy and data collection.
Critics point out that linking a personal email address to a profile could increase the amount of information associated with an individual user's Netflix activity. Users are also being reminded to review their communication preferences if they do not wish to receive promotional emails.
Netflix states that profile-linked email addresses help improve account management and user access, but subscribers remain free to manage marketing preferences separately.
Is Netflix introducing mandatory multifactor authentication?
No. Reports circulating online suggesting that Netflix will require multifactor authentication for all subscribers from July are false.
The authentication changes referenced in those reports apply only to certain business and partner accounts and do not affect regular consumer subscriptions.
For most subscribers, the update is primarily about convenience rather than restrictions. If you use a profile on a shared Netflix account, adding your own email address could make it easier to sign in, recover access and manage personal settings without relying on the account owner.
