Pink iPhones? Users say iPhone 17 Pro Cosmic Orange models losing original colour

# Tech Desk

Multiple social media users on platforms such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) have shared images of their iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max devices showing a noticeable pink discolouration. The affected models belong to Apple’s new “Cosmic Orange” range — the hero colour of the iPhone 17 Pro lineup.

Experts blame anodized aluminium finish

According to a report by Tom’s Guide, citing a technical analysis from PF Finishing, the discolouration stems from the porous nature of anodized aluminium. This material, unlike titanium used in older iPhones, can absorb certain chemicals — particularly hydrogen peroxide — leading to fading or a pinkish hue after repeated exposure.

Cleaning products may be the cause

Hydrogen peroxide, commonly found in cosmetics and household cleaning sprays, reacts with anodized aluminium. When such products come into contact with the phone’s surface, they may cause chemical changes that alter the dye’s colour. The Heritage Journal report referenced a 2013 blog post by PF Finishing expert Mark Jazefowicz explaining how anodized coatings can be damaged after just a few cleaning cycles involving peroxide-based agents.

Apple’s official cleaning advice

Apple’s official support documentation warns against using bleach or hydrogen peroxide to clean its devices. Instead, users are advised to gently wipe surfaces with 70% isopropyl or 75% ethyl alcohol wipes. The company emphasises avoiding moisture in any openings and never submerging Apple products in cleaning agents.

No official Apple statement yet

Apple has not yet released an official comment regarding the pink discolouration issue affecting the Cosmic Orange models. However, experts recommend that users handle their devices carefully and avoid using strong cleaning agents to maintain the phone’s vibrant finish.

Performance review: iPhone 17 Pro Max impresses

Despite the colour concerns, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has received strong early reviews for its features. Tech reviewer Hillel Fuld praised the model for its 8x optical zoom and exceptional battery life, describing it as “bananas — in the best way possible.” Fuld noted that heavy users could end their days with 40–50% battery remaining, calling the 17 Pro Max a worthwhile upgrade, particularly for those using older iPhones.

While the iPhone 17 Pro’s Cosmic Orange model faces an unexpected cosmetic issue, its technical performance remains highly rated. Users are advised to avoid peroxide-based products and follow Apple’s cleaning guidelines to preserve the device’s colour and finish.
