India unveils Hydrogen fuel cell-based backup power for telecom towers

In a significant breakthrough for India's renewable energy and telecom sectors, an innovative hydrogen fuel cell-based backup power solution has been developed to ensure seamless connectivity while promoting clean energy adoption.

This plug-and-play model, designed for telecom towers, offers a sustainable and efficient alternative to diesel generators, aligning with the nation’s renewable energy goals. With over a million telecom towers across India, including thousands in remote areas with limited grid access, maintaining uninterrupted service has been a challenge. 

The traditional reliance on diesel generators has not only proven costly but has also contributed significantly to carbon emissions.

PEM Fuel Cells: Cleaner, smarter alternative

The newly-developed Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology presents a viable and eco-friendly solution to power telecom towers, particularly during grid outages. Unlike diesel generators, PEM fuel cells generate electricity with water vapour as the only by-product, making them a clean energy source with low maintenance requirements.

These fuel cells operate efficiently with high power density in a compact size, enabling them to be easily transported and deployed. Their electrochemical process involves hydrogen gas fed into the anode, where it is oxidized to release protons. These protons travel through a polymer membrane to the cathode, where they react with oxygen to generate electricity and water.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have been actively promoting green energy adoption in telecom operations. According to TRAI’s 2012 directive, at least 50% of rural telecom towers and 33% of urban towers must transition to hybrid renewable energy sources. The integration of PEM fuel cells directly supports this vision by providing a sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable backup power solution.

ARCI's plug-and-play Hydrogen fuel cell innovation

The Centre for Fuel Cell Technology (CFCT) at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has developed this first-of-its-kind fuel cell-based backup power solution.

A key feature of this innovation is its plug-and-play model, which ensures ease of handling, transportability, and security. Unlike fixed fuel cell installations, this model allows power generation units to be shared among multiple telecom towers, ensuring backup power is available where needed the most.

Successful demonstration in Pune

In a landmark demonstration, ARCI showcased a mobile PEM fuel cell backup power solution for telecom towers at a site within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits. The trial was conducted in collaboration with Resicorre Technologies, Nashik.

This initiative is part of the Advanced Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Call–2021, a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India, aimed at establishing a reliable hydrogen fuel cell-based backup power system.

The innovative model offers several key advantages:

* Transportability: The power generation unit can be moved to different sites as needed.

* Reduced Dependency on Diesel Generators: Fuel cell technology eliminates the need for diesel backup power.

* Scalability: The system can be deployed across multiple telecom towers, optimizing energy usage.

* Lower Carbon Footprint: Helps India reduce emissions in the rapidly growing telecom sector.

With India's expanding digital infrastructure and increasing focus on sustainability, this hydrogen fuel cell innovation could revolutionize telecom operations. The successful deployment and demonstration of PEM fuel cells for telecom tower power supply will not only ensure uninterrupted connectivity but also accelerate India's transition to clean energy.
