Google I/O 2025 highlights: Gemini Ultra, AI search, Android XR, and more

At I/O 2025, Google unveiled a broad spectrum of AI-powered innovations across its flagship platforms. Many of the updates centre around its Gemini AI model, with enhancements also introduced to Search, Android, and Workspace. Here’s a breakdown of the most prominent consumer and developer announcements made during the event.
Gemini
Google’s AI Premium subscription is being rebranded as Google AI Pro, retaining its $19.99 monthly cost. This tier offers higher usage limits than the free version, and new features will continue to be added. Students in Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom can now access AI Pro for free throughout an academic year.
A new tier, Google AI Ultra, has been announced. Priced at $249.99 per month, it offers users early access to the latest experimental features.
Gemini 2.5 Flash has now moved out of its preview phase, offering faster and more efficient performance. Google notes that the 05-20 build is ranked just behind 2.5 Pro on the LM Arena Leaderboard.
Coming soon is Gemini 2.5 Deep Think, a new “enhanced reasoning” feature that excels in tasks involving mathematics, coding, and multimodal understanding. This mode is currently undergoing extra safety checks before it becomes available to Google AI Ultra subscribers.
The Imagen 4 model is being added to the Gemini app, delivering improved detail and more accurate text generation.
Meanwhile, Veo 3 now includes built-in audio generation for videos. This feature is currently offered to Goole AI Ultra users in the United States.
Google Search
Google is bringing its new AI Mode to all users in the US. Upcoming capabilities will be introduced here before being integrated into AI Overviews. Both experiences will soon utilise a customised version of Gemini 2.5.
AI Mode will soon be able to draw on personal context from a user's Gmail to deliver more personalised results. It will also support the creation of custom charts and graphs for sports and financial data visualisation.
Shopping functionality is being integrated into AI Mode. A dynamic product panel will update in real time as users refine their search queries.
Google Workspace
Gmail users can look forward to several enhancements, including Personalised Smart Replies, a new Inbox Cleanup feature, and embedded Calendar scheduling tools.
Google Meet Speech Translation acts like a live interpreter during calls. This is now available to test for users subscribed to AI Pro and Ultra tiers.
