Gmail is no longer just email: Google’s new AI wants to manage your day

Google said the new AI features will help users improve email writing, summarise long email threads, retrieve information buried in inboxes, and generate daily to-do lists. The tools mark one of the biggest updates to Gmail since its launch nearly 22 years ago.
Gmail currently has more than 3 billion users worldwide, making it one of Google’s most widely used services.
‘Help Me Write’ learns your writing style
The most widely available new feature is “Help Me Write”, which analyses a user’s writing style to personalise emails and offer real-time suggestions to refine tone, clarity, and structure.
The tool is designed to adapt to individual communication habits rather than generating generic responses.
Conversational search and AI Inbox for paid users
Subscribers to Google Pro and Ultra plans will gain access to advanced AI-powered search within Gmail. The feature allows users to ask conversational questions in the search bar to instantly locate specific information from emails.
Google is also testing an “AI Inbox” feature with a limited group of trusted users in the United States. When enabled, the tool scans inboxes to suggest tasks, reminders, and topics that may need attention.
“This is us delivering on Gmail proactively having your back,” said Blake Barnes, Google vice-president of product.
Powered by Gemini 3 AI model
All new features are built on Google’s Gemini 3 AI model, which was introduced into Google Search last year. The model is designed to function as a “thought partner” and has intensified competition with rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Limited rollout and privacy concerns
Initially, the AI features will be available only in English and only in the United States, with Google promising a gradual expansion to other countries and languages later this year.
The expansion raises concerns about accuracy, misinformation, and privacy, particularly as AI tools analyse personal inbox data. Google said users can turn off the features at any time and will still be able to review content before sending emails.
The company also stated that email content analysed by Gmail AI will not be used to train its models, adding that new engineering safeguards have been implemented to protect user privacy.
