Nurburg: 66-year-old driver died on Saturday following a multi-car collision during an endurance race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, an event that included four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen among the competitors.

The tragedy occurred during the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers. Organisers identified the deceased as Juha Miettinen, who was involved in a crash that ensnared seven vehicles. Race officials immediately suspended the session to facilitate an intensive emergency response.

“Following the collision between several vehicles, race control immediately halted the race to allow for extensive recovery and rescue operations,” organisers said in a formal statement.

The statement further detailed the gravity of the medical intervention: “Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the emergency medics were unable to save the driver involved, Juha Miettinen, after he had been extracted from the vehicle; the driver died at the Medical Centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful.”

Safety Status of Other Competitors

Six other drivers involved in the pile-up were transported to the circuit’s medical facility and local hospitals. Officials confirmed that these individuals underwent precautionary evaluations and that none sustained life-threatening injuries.

The Nordschleife circuit remains one of the most hazardous in motorsport, spanning nearly 13 miles through the German countryside with more than 150 turns. The track has not hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix since 1976, the year Niki Lauda was severely burned in a near-fatal accident.

Verstappen Offers Condolences

Max Verstappen, who was utilising the weekend as a preparatory stint for his debut in the 24-hour sports car race scheduled for May 16-17, expressed his grief via social media.

“Shocked by what happened today. Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be,” Verstappen wrote on Instagram. “Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha’s family and loved ones.”

In tribute to Miettinen, a minute of silence will be observed during the grid formation prior to Sunday's scheduled competition. Despite the modern safety advancements in racing, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with the historic high-speed circuit.
