India’s celebrated badminton stars Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap have announced their separation after nearly seven years of marriage. The former world No 1 and Olympic bronze medallist took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message, confirming the couple’s decision to part ways.

“Life takes us in different directions sometimes,” Saina wrote in a brief note to her followers. “After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We’re choosing peace, growth, and healing — for ourselves and each other. I’m grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time.”

The pair tied the knot in December 2018, following years of companionship as fellow trainees under the mentorship of Pullela Gopichand.

A journey of historic firsts

Saina Nehwal, who hails from Haryana, has been one of India’s most influential sportspersons in badminton. She first rose to prominence in 2008 by clinching the BWF World Junior Championship title. That same year, she made her Olympic debut, where she became the first Indian woman to reach the quarter-finals of the Games, defeating then world No 5 Wang Chen of Hong Kong before bowing out to Indonesia’s Maria Kristin Yulianti.

Her ascent continued with a landmark victory at the Indonesia Open in 2009, making her the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series title. In the years that followed, Saina received some of the country’s highest sporting honours, including the Arjuna Award in 2009 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2010. She remains the only Indian female shuttler to have attained the world No. 1 ranking.

Kashyap’s golden run and career highs

Parupalli Kashyap, meanwhile, carved a niche of his own in Indian badminton. He clinched a historic gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Indian male shuttler in 32 years to do so. A key moment in his career came in 2012, when he became the first Indian man to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games.

Kashyap achieved his career-best world ranking of No 6 in 2013. Despite facing a series of injuries in the following years, he remained a respected and tenacious figure on the international badminton circuit. Trained under legends Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand, Kashyap’s journey has been marked by resilience and quiet determination.
