Indian middle-distance runner Harmilan Bains, a silver medallist in the 800m and 1500m at the 2022 Asian Games, has shared her emotional journey following her failure to qualify for the Paris Olympics. Bains, who held the national record in the 1500m and had not lost a personal race since 2021, faced a significant setback due to a knee surgery that sidelined her for nearly ten months. Despite making a strong comeback and performing admirably at the 2022 Asian Games, missing out on the Paris Olympics led her into a deep mental struggle.

Bains admitted to falling into a state of depression and even contemplating suicide as a result of the immense pressure and disappointment. She has now emerged with a powerful message for the younger generation, advocating for resilience and enjoyment in sports.

"My message is to enjoy sports and not be enslaved by pressure," Bains said. "After losing the chance to compete in the Olympics, I was under severe stress and literally in a state of depression. Thoughts of suicide crossed my mind. I even felt like abandoning everything and fleeing from my city. My advice to parents is to let your children pursue whatever they desire. To the youth, if you ever feel like changing your sport or career, don’t hesitate. Enjoy what you do, regardless of what it is."

Bains' candid revelation serves as a source of inspiration, urging young athletes to remain steadfast and find joy in their pursuits despite the challenges they may face. (With inputs from Agencies)
