From intern to rival: The coaching link between Yakin and Petkovic in Switzerland vs Algeria

Vancouver: The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash in Vancouver proved to be more than just a football match; it was a profound narrative of professional lineage. Switzerland’s 2-0 victory over Algeria was masterminded by Murat Yakin, who once gained invaluable insight into the coaching profession by interning under his counterpart, Algeria manager Vladimir Petković.

The "master versus apprentice" narrative added significant intrigue to the fixture at BC Place. Yakin, who served as a coaching intern during Petković's tenure at BSC Young Boys, spoke candidly about his respect for the man who once guided the Swiss national team. "I had the opportunity to do an internship at Young Boys... and saw him work and the way he leads his teams," Yakin noted, highlighting a bond that remained respectful despite the high stakes of a World Cup knockout match.

Vladimir Petković, who managed the Swiss national team for seven years between 2014 and 2021, played a pivotal role in developing several players currently in the Swiss squad, including captain Granit Xhaka and striker Breel Embolo. Embolo acknowledged that Petković "really raised the bar" during his time in Switzerland, a legacy that the North African side hoped to utilise to their advantage.

However, it was the "apprentice" who ultimately prevailed. In a display of tactical discipline, Yakin’s Switzerland remained clinical, with Embolo opening the scoring in the 10th minute and Dan Ndoye doubling the lead shortly after the interval. The result not only eliminated Algeria but secured Switzerland’s first World Cup knockout victory since 1938, ending an 88-year wait for the nation.

For Petković, the match marked an emotional return to face the team he once transformed. While his Algerian side struggled to break down a well-organised Swiss defence, the encounter underscored the enduring influence he has had on modern Swiss football. The Swiss now advance to the Round of 16 to face either Colombia or Ghana.
