Cape Verde's World Cup hero was recruited through LinkedIn

Roberto Lopes played a crucial role in Cape Verde's stunning 0-0 draw against Spain at the 5th FIFA World Cup 2026 on Monday. Yet the defender's journey to football's biggest stage almost never happened after he initially ignored a LinkedIn message inviting him to represent Cape Verde.
From LinkedIn inbox to the World Cup stage
While many football careers begin through scouts and academies, Lopes' international journey started in an unusual way.
Back in 2017, Cape Verde's football authorities contacted the Dublin-born defender through LinkedIn after discovering his family connection to the island nation through his father, Carlos Lopes.
However, the message was written in Portuguese, leading Lopes to mistake it for spam.
The message that almost went unanswered
At the time, Lopes was balancing football with a career outside the sport. He was working as a mortgage adviser while playing in Ireland's domestic league. Because he could not understand the original message, he ignored it completely.
Nearly nine months later, a follow-up message arrived in English. This time Lopes realised it was a genuine invitation from Cape Verde's national team. Speaking about the moment, he admitted he felt embarrassed for not replying earlier and immediately became interested after translating the original message.
Lopes qualified to represent Cape Verde through his father, who was born in the African nation.
Once he understood the opportunity, he quickly began the paperwork process needed to switch his international allegiance. The defender made his debut for Cape Verde in 2019 and has since become one of the team's most dependable players.
Heroics against Spain
Lopes' remarkable journey came full circle on football's biggest stage when Cape Verde made their World Cup debut against Spain.
Facing one of the tournament favourites, the defender produced a disciplined performance and made a crucial late block to help secure a historic goalless draw.
Alongside veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, Lopes helped frustrate the European champions throughout the match, with Cape Verde successfully resisting 27 Spanish attempts on goal.
Leaving behind life as a bank worker
Before becoming a World Cup player, Lopes was far from football stardom.
The 33-year-old spent years working a regular office job while playing part-time football in Ireland.
His career changed when Shamrock Rovers offered him a full-time professional contract, allowing him to focus entirely on football.
That decision ultimately paved the way for his international success with Cape Verde.
A dream realised on the global stage
For Lopes, representing Cape Verde at the World Cup is more than a sporting achievement.
The defender has often spoken about the pride of representing his family's heritage and carrying the Lopes name onto the world stage.
Shortly after helping Cape Verde qualify for the tournament, he also became a father for the first time, making the past year especially memorable.
Cape Verde's historic rise
Cape Verde's appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 is one of the tournament's most inspiring stories.
With a population of just over half a million people, the island nation became one of the smallest countries ever to qualify for a World Cup.
The team has steadily risen through international football over the past two decades and announced their arrival on the biggest stage by holding Spain to a shock draw in their opening match.
From ignored message to national hero
What began as an overlooked LinkedIn notification has become one of the most remarkable stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Had Roberto Lopes continued to ignore that message, Cape Verde might have been without one of the defenders who helped secure the biggest result in the nation's football history.
