Cristiano Ronaldo has shut down fresh speculation over his international future, saying he has no intention of discussing retirement while Portugal remains alive at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Portugal captain's comments came amid growing debate about whether the tournament could be his final appearance on football's biggest stage, with remarks from his sister earlier drawing attention to the possibility of retirement.

However, the 41-year-old made it clear that his immediate focus is on Portugal's World Cup campaign rather than what comes next.

"I don't make reckless decisions," Ronaldo said after Portugal's victory over Croatia.

"I will decide after the tournament, not now," he added.

The statement followed another record-breaking night for the veteran forward, who played a key role in Portugal's dramatic 2-1 win over Croatia in the Round of 32.

Ronaldo levelled the contest from the penalty spot in the 67th minute after a VAR review awarded Portugal a spot-kick. The goal not only brought Roberto Martinez's side back into the game but also earned Ronaldo another place in World Cup history.

At 41 years and 147 days, Ronaldo became the oldest player ever to score in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. The strike was also his first goal in the knockout rounds of the tournament despite featuring in a record sixth World Cup.

Croatia had taken the lead through Ivan Perisic, who became his country's all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with the opener. But Portugal responded strongly after the break, with Ronaldo spearheading the comeback.

The Al-Nassr forward's influence throughout the contest was recognised when he was named Player of the Match.

Portugal eventually completed the turnaround in stoppage time as substitute Goncalo Ramos headed home the winner, sparking celebrations among the Portuguese players and fans.

Croatia endured a frustrating night, with two goals ruled out for offside, including a dramatic late effort that would have levelled the match in added time.

The result sends Portugal into the Round of 16, where they will face rivals Spain in one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage.
