‘Only on one condition’: Ashwin names players Mumbai Indians should demand in Hardik Pandya trade

Mumbai: Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his perspective on the growing speculation surrounding Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya’s potential IPL trade ahead of the 2027 season. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin outlined the tactical dilemmas facing five-time champions Mumbai Indians as reports link Pandya with prospective moves to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The KKR Dilemma and Ashwin’s Condition

According to reports, trade chatter suggests CSK could offer Shivam Dube alongside an Indian pace bowler, whereas KKR’s proposed package reportedly involves Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. However, Ashwin expressed caution regarding a deal for Green, questioning his potential availability given international commitments such as the Ashes.

"If I were MI, I would accept a deal with KKR on only one condition, which is getting Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in return. That is the only way MI gets stronger," Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel. He emphasised that securing high-impact Indian talent is vital for Mumbai to justify sanctioning a departure for their captain.

Preventing Rivals From Gaining Supremacy

Ashwin also highlighted the strategic implications for Mumbai Indians when trading a marquee all-rounder to rival franchises. The veteran off-spinner urged MI management to carefully weigh how such a deal might alter the competitive balance of the league:

• Chennai Super Kings: Ashwin noted that acquiring Pandya in exchange for Dube and a pacer would make CSK stronger, but "not invincible".
• Kolkata Knight Riders: Adding Pandya to KKR’s setup, according to Ashwin, would transform them into a "lethal batting lineup" and a formidable contender.

"These are teams with five, five and three titles, so MI have to think how they can ensure one of these teams doesn't leapfrog them," Ashwin added.

Background Behind the Trade Rumours

The trade chatter follows a difficult IPL 2026 campaign for Mumbai Indians. MI finished ninth in the 10-team points table, missing out on the playoffs for a second consecutive year. Pandya struggled to make a major impact during the tournament, collecting 206 runs and taking four wickets across 10 appearances.
