Chennai: Legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is expected to make his highly anticipated season debut for the Chennai Super Kings in their high-profile IPL 2026 clash against rival Mumbai Indians this Thursday.

The former captain, affectionately known as "Thala," appears poised to resume his duties behind the stumps after an extended period of rehabilitation. Former CSK teammate Ravichandran Ashwin confirmed that Dhoni has been declared fit, noting that the veteran is likely to displace the franchise's recent acquisition, Sanju Samson, in the wicketkeeping role.

Medical Clearance and Preparation

Speculation regarding Dhoni’s return solidified after he was observed during a training session at the nets, where he engaged in both batting and wicketkeeping drills. Observers noted that the player appeared at ease, facing deliveries from overseas fast bowlers Matt Henry and Jamie Overton without showing visible distress from a previously reported calf injury.

"I've never seen Dhoni keeping in the nets before—never in my life. Today, he was keeping, which means he is going to take the wicket-keeping gloves, and Sanju would have to take an outfield role or might come in as an impact player," Ashwin stated via his YouTube channel. "And I'm 100% sure that he will play tomorrow. I've heard that he is fit and good to go."

Although initial medical assessments suggested a two-week recovery period, Dhoni’s absence ultimately stretched across the first 25 days of the current campaign.

Roster Fluctuations

While the Super Kings welcome back their most iconic figure, the squad continues to grapple with significant attrition. The franchise recently confirmed that pacer Khaleel Ahmed and batter Ayush Mhatre have been ruled out for the rest of the 2026 season due to injuries. Chennai has yet to announce official replacements for either player.
