Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson retires, draws curtain on 17-year career

Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson has announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished 17-year career across international, domestic, and franchise cricket.
A member of Australia’s title-winning squad at the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Richardson finishes as one of the most successful bowlers in Big Bash League history. Over 15 BBL seasons, he picked up 142 wickets, the fifth-highest tally in the competition’s men’s records.
Richardson represented Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Sixers in the BBL, leaving a strong legacy at each franchise. His most impactful stint came with the Renegades, where he played a key role in their BBL|08 championship triumph and remains the club’s leading men’s wicket-taker with 104 wickets in 80 matches.
At the international level, the Victorian pacer featured in 25 One-Day Internationals and 36 T20 Internationals for Australia. His T20 journey began in 2009 with South Australia during the original state-based Big Bash competition, before he went on to play in the Strikers’ inaugural BBL match and six seasons with the club.
Injuries limited Richardson in recent years, with the 34-year-old making just two appearances for the Sydney Sixers in BBL 15, which proved to be his final season.
He confirmed his retirement through an Instagram post on Monday, drawing tributes from across the cricketing fraternity. Close friend and teammate Adam Zampa wrote, “My friend has played his last game of professional cricket; 18 years in the game, wouldn’t be the person I am without him.”
Beyond T20s, Richardson played 34 first-class matches, taking 102 wickets, and 98 List A games, claiming 153 dismissals. His 201-match T20 career also saw him feature in leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals and Pune Warriors, as well as stints in England and the UAE.
