Ahmedabad: Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah shared seven wickets as West Indies were bowled out for 162 runs, leaving India at 121-2 in reply at stumps on day one of the first Test on Thursday.

Siraj claimed 4-40 in 14 overs, while Bumrah picked up 3-42 as the visitors were dismissed in 44.1 overs. No. 7 batter Justin Greaves top-scored with 32; no other batter passed 30. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav took 2-25 in 6.2 overs.

By stumps, India trailed by 41 runs with Lokesh Rahul unbeaten on 53 and captain Shubman Gill 18 not out.

West Indies falter early

The visitors lost three wickets within the first 10 overs and five by lunch after electing to bat. Attempts to play aggressive shots did not pay off.

Siraj grabbed 3-19 in the morning, while Bumrah took a few overs to find his rhythm. Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul was caught behind for an 11-ball duck. Bumrah struck in the seventh over to dismiss fellow opener John Campbell for 8, also caught behind.

Captain Roston Chase and Shai Hope added 48 for the fifth wicket, their best morning session partnership, before Yadav removed Hope. Post-lunch, Chase was caught behind off Siraj. Greaves and debutant Khary Pierre helped the side pass 150. Pierre made 11 off 34 balls and was out lbw to Washington Sundar.

India respond steadily

India began their innings after tea. Rahul put on 68 off 110 balls with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 36 off 54 deliveries with seven fours before being caught behind attempting an attack on Jayden Seales in the 19th over.

Sai Sudharsan, playing at his IPL home ground, was out lbw for 7 to Chase, leaving India 90-2. Play was extended by 22 minutes due to a brief rain interruption. Rahul reached his half-century off 101 balls despite leg cramps, adding 31 with Gill before stumps.

Historical context

West Indies have not defeated India in their last 25 Tests, home or away, dating back to 2002.
