Big setback for CSK as in-form Ayush Mhatre’s season ends abruptly

Chennai Super Kings have suffered a significant setback in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 after young batter Ayush Mhatre was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a left hamstring injury.
The franchise confirmed the development in an official statement, stating that the injury was sustained during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. The recovery period has been estimated at six to 12 weeks, effectively ending the 18-year-old’s campaign this season.
“Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 due to a left hamstring injury sustained while batting during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. Ayush's injury will require a rehabilitation period of 6-12 weeks. We wish Ayush a speedy recovery,” the franchise said.
Mhatre had shown promising form in the match before the injury. He scored a quick 30 off 13 balls, including five fours and a six, as CSK raced to 60/1 in the first four overs. However, while attempting a second run, he pulled up in visible discomfort, indicating a hamstring strain. His movement was restricted thereafter, and he was dismissed just two deliveries later.
The injury proved to be a turning point in the match, as momentum shifted towards Sunrisers Hyderabad, who went on to secure a 10-run victory.
Prior to the setback, Mhatre had emerged as a key contributor to CSK’s top order. In six matches, he scored 201 runs at an impressive strike rate of 177.88, including two half-centuries, making him one of the standout young performers for the team this season.
His absence adds to Chennai Super Kings’ growing injury concerns. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is dealing with a calf strain, while pacer Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out with a grade 2 quadriceps tear. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis had also been sidelined earlier.
With multiple key players unavailable, CSK now face a challenging phase in the tournament. The team management may need to reassess combinations and look for replacements as they aim to maintain momentum in the remaining matches of the season.
