Shubman Gill’s vision: India aims for consistent 350+ totals after massive Test win

New Chandigarh: Following his team’s substantial victory over Afghanistan in the one-off Test match, Indian captain Shubman Gill expressed satisfaction with the performance and indicated that the squad's primary objective is to consistently establish first-innings totals between 350 and 400 runs.
Centuries from Gill and KL Rahul, combined with dominant bowling performances from spin bowlers Manav Suthar and Washington Sundar, guided the Indian national team to its largest-ever margin of victory in Test history, defeating Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
During the post-match presentation, Gill characterised the performance as a comprehensive team effort.
"Very happy with that (win). (Thought process to enforce the follow-on?) It was very hot. We decided that if we get them before lunch or just after the first drinks, we will see if the bowlers are fresh, and we will give them a follow-on. If not, we'll bat a couple of sessions, and maybe at the end of the day, we'll give them the ball again. But we got quick wickets, we came back. And also the way our fast bowlers bowled, Siraj got us that crucial wicket when we gave them a follow-on, and Prasidh got three important wickets," Gill said.
Reflecting on the performance of his spin bowling contingent—comprising Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and the debutant Suthar, who claimed six wickets in the opening innings—the captain affirmed his confidence in their capabilities.
"The kind of quality, I think, Manav, Washi and Kuldeep have, all three of them, there was never any doubt. It is all about getting the experience and getting a number of overs and seeing, on wickets like these, how to set the batsman up, keep varying the pace, keep testing the batsman in different areas," Gill noted.
Gill emphasised that as the team navigates a transitional phase under his leadership, the operational mandate remains to secure a minimum score of 350 runs whenever the team bats first.
"I think there's enough trust in our bowling group that we can take 20 wickets anywhere. Whenever there is a transition, we feel the batting group is under more pressure, and we are trying to get experience. We are trying to build here to see what kind of game can work for us as a batting group, and in different conditions and different situations. How can we keep posting regularly, 350-400 totals on the board," he concluded.
The foundational total of 564-8 declared was established following centuries by Rahul, who scored 100 runs off 165 deliveries with 11 boundaries, and Gill, who accumulated 126 runs off 177 balls with 15 boundaries and a solitary six.
The subsequent bowling performance from Suthar, who recorded figures of 6-33, and Sundar, who claimed 4-36, concluded the match by dismissing the Afghan lineup for scores of 152 and 112 in their respective innings.
Because the standalone fixture was organised outside the parameters of the current ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, the result will not alter India’s position in the tournament standings, where the team currently occupies sixth place.
