Heinrich Klaasen's fireworks with the bat went in vain as India beat South Africa by seven runs to lift the ICC T20 World Cup at the Kinsington Oval on Saturday. The thrilling contest saw fortunes swing in favour of both teams before pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya picked up the ball to swing the match in India's favour.

Chasing a target of 177 runs set by India, South Africa had a turbulent start as Reeza Hendricks was dismissed in just the second over, courtesy of a brilliant outswinger by Jasprit Bumrah. The pressure intensified when captain Aiden Markram fell soon after to Arshdeep Singh. However, Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs stabilized the innings with a 58-run partnership off 38 deliveries.

India maintained control over the South African innings by picking up key wickets at crucial intervals. Axar Patel claimed the wicket of Stubbs, while Arshdeep Singh dismissed De Kock to halt their progress. Heinrich Klaasen then briefly swung momentum in South Africa's favour with a quickfire 24 runs in the 15th over.

Nevertheless, India swiftly regained momentum when Hardik Pandya removed Klaasen in the 17th over, reasserting their dominance in the match.

In the crucial 19th over, Arshdeep Singh conceded just four runs, leaving South Africa with a daunting task of scoring 16 runs off the final over to clinch victory. Facing Hardik Pandya's delivery, David Miller attempted a lofted shot, but mistimed it, resulting in a toe-end connection. Suryakumar Yadav, stationed at long-off, sprinted forward, leapt, and managed to catch the swirling ball before it hit the ground. Miller departed after a brief innings of 21 runs off 17 balls.

Hardik Pandya continued to exert pressure in the last over, dismissing Kagiso Rabada, who skied a catch to a fielder stationed deep. India maintained their nerve and sealed the title with a thrilling victory, setting off jubilant and emotional celebrations in Barbados and across India.

Earlier, in the first innings, India's quest for T20 World Cup glory saw a remarkable resurgence led by Axar Patel and Virat Kohli against South Africa. Starting with a shaky foundation at 34/3 within the powerplay, India's hopes rested on their captain and Axar's shoulders.

Virat Kohli laid the foundation for recovery with a scintillating 76 off 59 deliveries. His innings was crucial in stabilizing India after losing early wickets. Axar Patel complemented Kohli's efforts with a blistering 47 runs off just 31 balls, injecting much-needed momentum into India's innings.

Together, Kohli and Axar forged a pivotal 72-run partnership that steered India away from the brink of collapse. Despite a setback due to a run-out, where Axar fell short of his crease, their contribution was instrumental in India's total of 176/7, marking the highest T20 World Cup score in a final's first innings.

South Africa's bowlers put up a spirited effort to contain India, with Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje each claiming two wickets. Maharaj, in particular, impressed with figures of 2/23 from his 3 overs.

The match, unfolding under the Caribbean sun, showcased Kohli's masterful stroke play, including boundaries and a towering six off Kagiso Rabada in the latter overs. Despite losing steam towards the end, India managed to accumulate 42 runs in the final three overs, setting a challenging target for South Africa.

Brief Scores: India 176/7 (Virat Kohli 76, Axar Patel 47; Keshav Maharaj 2-23, Anrich Nortje 2-26) beat South Africa 169/8 (Heinrich Klaasen 52, Quinton de Kock 39; Hardik Pandya 3-20, Jasprit Bumrah 2-18) by seven runs
