Imagine swiping left on the future mayor: Woman says she rejected Zohran Mamdani for being ‘too short’

A dating app anecdote has taken social media by storm after a woman claimed she once turned down Zohran Mamdani – long before he became New York City’s youngest and most talked-about mayor.
The viral moment began when a tweet, captioned “Fumble of the century,” showed a screenshot of a TikTok post in which a woman recalled matching with Mamdani on Hinge a few years ago. At the time, she said, she swiped left because of his listed height.
The post that went viral
In her story, the woman admitted she had matched with Mamdani back when he was just another face on the New York dating scene. Her reason for not pursuing the match was simple – or so she thought at the time. “He was listed as either 5'11 or 5'10 and younger me knew that meant he was most likely 5'9. Present me appreciates that he was more honest than most guys on there,” the post read.
The light-hearted confession quickly spread across social media, with users sharing amused and sympathetic reactions. Many called it the “fumble of the century,” pointing out how the woman had unknowingly passed up on the man who would go on to become New York’s youngest mayor.
Internet reactions
The revelation sparked a flood of reactions online. “Somewhere in America right now, a future President of the United States is barely getting matches on apps & getting ghosted after the first date because he was too nice & gave her the ick,” one user wrote.
Another said, “I'm sure she cries herself to sleep most nights because this is exactly what I'd do.”
“Imagine fumbling the future Mayor of NYC because of his height,” another chimed in.
Some users, however, criticised the woman for sharing the story publicly. “it's really beautiful how willingly people embarrass themselves on the internet,” one person commented. Another wrote, “Even when a man accomplishes some like becoming a Muslim mayor in nyc a women will still find a way to make it about her.”
Amid the humour and disbelief, others questioned the authenticity of the post. “this is a cute little funny story you tell your best friends not tiktok. clout chasing is a very real disease…” one user said. Another added, “People make up stories for engagement,” while a third called it “extremely obviously fake lol.”
Zohran Mamdani’s real-life love story
Ironically, Mamdani did find love on the same app. The politician met his wife, Rama Duwaji, on Hinge in 2021. The pair kept their relationship private as Mamdani’s political career began to take off.
After dating for some time, the two got engaged in October 2024 and celebrated their nikah and engagement party that December in Dubai, with a lavish ceremony overlooking the Burj Khalifa. They later held a civil wedding at the New York City Clerk’s Office in early 2025, followed by a family celebration in Uganda.
Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist, has largely stayed away from the political spotlight but has been a consistent presence throughout Mamdani’s rise. Born in Houston, Texas, to Syrian parents, she moved to Dubai at the age of nine. Her multicultural background – shaped by both Arab roots and Western education – heavily influences her art.
She studied at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar before transferring to its Richmond campus in Virginia and later earned a master’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York.
