History repeats? Trump event gunfire linked to Reagan assassination attempt

Washington: A sudden security incident led to the evacuation of Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and several senior officials during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night after gunfire was reported.
Reagan assassination attempt referenced
Amid the unfolding developments, Trump ally Laura Loomer drew parallels with a past incident involving Ronald Reagan. In a post on X, she claimed, “They’re trying to kill President Trump again at the same location Ronald Reagan was shot.”
On 30 March 1981, just 69 days into his presidency, Reagan was shot outside the Washington Hilton Hotel by John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley discharged six rounds from a .22-calibre revolver. One bullet deflected off the presidential limousine and struck Reagan under his left arm, lodging close to his heart.
Reagan was immediately taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He recovered and returned to the White House within two weeks.
The hotel later added a secure garage for the presidential limousine, with direct access to a private lift and staircase that lead straight to the presidential suite.
Tense moments reported at Trump-attended gathering
A law enforcement official confirmed that shots had been fired, though precise details were unclear in the immediate aftermath. Multiple attendees stated they heard between five and eight gunshots. Despite the chaos, there were no immediate reports of injuries.
The event, hosted at the Washington Hilton, had attracted a large audience of journalists, public figures and political leaders awaiting an address by President Trump.
Among those present were Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Shooter in custody, event to be rescheduled
President Trump later confirmed that the suspect involved in Saturday’s incident is in custody. The White House Correspondents’ Association event will be rescheduled within 30 days.
Following the evacuation, President Donald J Trump addressed the media during a press conference held at the White House Press Briefing Room.
