Thailand has crowned its first-ever Miss World, and the crown rests on the head of a 21-year-old health campaigner who turned personal pain into purpose. Opal Suchata Chuangsri, a student of international relations and a passionate advocate for women's health, was named the 72nd Miss World at a glittering event held at HITEX Exhibition Centre in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Opal, crowned by outgoing Miss World Krystyna Pyszková, made history as Thailand’s first winner of the prestigious title. Her grace, multilingual fluency, and unwavering commitment to social causes helped her emerge as a standout contestant at the global pageant. For the ceremony, Suchata donned a white gown adorned with opal-like florals. The gown symbolised both healing and strength.

During the final Q&A round, Opal’s thoughtful words captured hearts worldwide. Asked by Bollywood actor Sonu Sood about what her journey had taught her about storytelling and personal responsibility, she said, “I always believe that no matter who you are and no matter how old you are, no matter what title you hold in your life, there is always a person next to you -- whether it's a child, whether it's an adult, it could even be your own parents -- that look up to you in a way. And the best way to lead people is to lead with their gracefulness in your actions. That is the best thing we can do to the people around us and in our world.”

She also shared her success mantra that form the backbone of her professional life, confidence, determination, and compassion. She told the media, "Always believe in yourself. Stick to your core values. I'm here today because I held onto my purpose and believed in myself. Also, don't forget to love yourself along the journey. It's not always easy -- it can be exhausting and discouraging at times. But if you never give up, you'll eventually get to where you're meant to be."

Born on 20 September 2003 in the coastal province of Phuket, Opal grew up in a family engaged in the hospitality sector. Her parents, Thanet Donkamnerd and Supatra Chuangsri, operate a private business in Thalang, instilling in her an early sense of communication and cultural sensitivity.

Educated at Kajonkietsuksa School and Triam Udom Suksa School, she later enrolled at Thammasat University’s Faculty of Political Science to pursue a degree in politics and international relations. Alongside her academic pursuits, Opal developed fluency in Thai, English, and Chinese – a skill that bolstered her presence on international platforms.

Her love for music and animals also marks her personality – she plays the ukulele (backwards, no less) and cares for several dogs and cats.

From personal challenge to public campaign

At 16, Opal faced a health scare when she discovered a benign breast lump, which required surgery. This life-altering moment became the foundation for her campaign, “Opal For Her,” which aims to educate young women about breast health and the importance of early detection.

The initiative served as her “Beauty With a Purpose” project at Miss World, and it reflected her desire to not only shine as a beauty queen but to create lasting impact.

“I believe that with the Miss World title, in the future, I could definitely make more impact and also help other projects that are in need,” she said during the competition. “Success means to live your life and to create a life that's better for people around you as well.”

Opal’s foray into pageantry began with Miss Rattanakosin in 2021. She went on to compete in Miss Universe Thailand 2022, where she finished as third runner-up and was later promoted to second runner-up. In 2024, she represented Thailand at the 73rd Miss Universe in Mexico City, earning global admiration and the “Voice for Change – Silver” award for her advocacy.

She was crowned Miss World Thailand 2025 on 22 April, just a week before flying to India for the Miss World competition.

Beyond her pageant accolades, Opal often works with the Thai government to promote cultural heritage, including traditional textiles and crafts. As a cultural ambassador, she strives to bridge global awareness with local traditions, reinforcing Thailand's soft power on the world stage.
