Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, one of the largest cruise ships in the world, was forced to turn back to PortMiami on Monday after a fight broke out among passengers, leaving two people hospitalised.

What really happened?

The cruise line confirmed that medical teams on the vessel assisted those caught up in the altercation.

“Our team provided medical care to adult guests who were involved in an altercation onboard, and the guests are being treated for their injuries,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement.

Witnesses reported chaos as the fight escalated near the pool area, with some areas roped off before the captain ordered the ship to head back. Social media posts suggested one passenger may have suffered a broken ankle.

Emergency response

When the ship returned to Miami, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews were on site to respond to the medical call. The injured guests were later taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

Royal Caribbean said it had updated authorities and was cooperating fully. “We notified local authorities and are working closely with them,” the company added. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we have no more information to share at this time.”

Miami-Dade Police and the US Coast Guard were also alerted. Officials have not released the identities of those involved, and no arrests have yet been confirmed.

Cruise itinerary disrupted

The Wonder of the Seas had departed Miami earlier the same day, bound for a four-day sailing through the Bahamas with scheduled stops in Nassau and Coco Cay. The incident happened early into the voyage, forcing the captain to make the decision to return to Florida.

With a capacity of more than 5,600 passengers, the vessel is currently ranked as the world’s fourth-largest cruise ship.

Previous scuffles at sea

This is not the first time violence has been reported aboard Royal Caribbean ships. Last month, a video went viral showing a separate brawl “over chicken tenders” involving several young passengers, which left crew struggling to restore order. “Over chicken tenders is crazy,” said Mike Terra, the passenger who filmed the fight.

Investigation under way

Royal Caribbean said the altercation involved only a small group of passengers. Cruise lines typically enforce strict codes of conduct, and guests who engage in violent behaviour can face lifetime bans.

The company has not confirmed whether disciplinary action will be taken against those involved, but officials emphasised that the safety of passengers and crew remains the priority.
