Kathmandu: A house left standing amid a landscape of mud, debris and destroyed structures has emerged as one of the striking videos from the devastating flash floods that swept through Nepal, after a family inside the building appeared to watch helplessly as floodwaters tore through everything around them.

A video circulating on social media shows the family gathered on the upper floor of a turquoise two-storey house as a powerful torrent of muddy water surges through the area. Nearby structures appear to collapse or get swept away, while vehicles and debris are carried along by the floodwaters.

Yet the house remains standing.

In another video that has now gone viral, the same house can be seen after the disaster. Much of the surrounding area appears buried under mud, rocks and debris, with damaged structures and wreckage scattered around it. The house itself remains intact, although its exterior appears covered in mud.

The family was eventually rescued, turning the scene into a rare story of survival amid a disaster that has devastated communities across Nepal.

The dramatic footage has drawn widespread attention online because of the stark contrast between the house and its surroundings.

The apparent survival of the structure has led social media users to describe the scene as a miracle.

One user simply wrote, “Miracle.” Another said, “God bless them.”

“Oh it’s such a relief that they survived. Whole world saw that they were living on the edge. Thank God finally they made it. Horrible situation. Prayers to God,” another user wrote.

Nepal floods leave trail of destruction

The extraordinary survival of the family comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of one of the country’s most devastating recent flood disasters.

Severe flash floods struck the Bhotekoshi River area on August 26, causing extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other infrastructure. Authorities have been carrying out search and rescue operations as the scale of the destruction continues to emerge.

The floods swept through communities along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river, carrying huge amounts of water, mud and debris downstream. Homes and vehicles were among the things swept away in the disaster.

The disaster followed a glacial collapse in the Himalayas that sent a massive surge of rock, ice and water into the river system, triggering the catastrophic flooding.
