Multiple dead, several injured in shooting at Burger restaurant in Idaho; gunman among the dead

Boise, Idaho: Multiple people were killed and several others injured after a shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, southern Idaho, on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The suspected gunman was also found dead at the scene, Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks told reporters. Investigators are working to identify the shooter and determine a motive.

"We believe the threat to the community is over," Hicks said.

He said authorities were still confirming the number of people killed and injured as officers worked to notify victims' families.

"It was a very chaotic scene."

Earlier, Twin Falls County Commissioner Brent Reinke said Sheriff Jack Johnson had informed him that at least five people had been injured in the attack.

Witness Lane Koehn, 34, said he was stopped at a traffic light near the restaurant when he saw a person carrying an AR-style rifle emerge from the drive-thru. According to Koehn, another man armed with a handgun opened fire on the suspected shooter.

Koehn said he later saw an In-N-Out employee pulling a wounded co-worker, who had been shot in the chest, across the parking lot. He and the armed bystander stayed with the injured employee until paramedics arrived.

"She was pretty bad off, but I don’t know. I hope she made it," Koehn said.

Police ordered Koehn and others to evacuate as officers responded to what was initially treated as an active shooting.

Koehn estimated the gunman fired at least three or four rounds but said it was unclear whether any specific individuals had been targeted.

The shooting occurred near a busy commercial area crowded with shoppers, Chief Hicks said. Investigators are interviewing witnesses and have urged anyone with information to contact police.

Authorities from multiple agencies responded after receiving reports of the shooting shortly before 4 p.m., Reinke said.

Police have closed surrounding roads and advised the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Taylor Marschner, spokesperson for St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Centre, said the hospital was coordinating with emergency responders.

"Working closely with law enforcement and emergency responders as they manage the situation."

Twin Falls, home to about 56,000 residents, is located roughly 130 miles southeast of Boise and about 75 miles north of the Nevada border.
