IDF airstrike kills Oct 7 Hamas commander Muhammad Suleiman Byouk in Gaza

Jerusalem: The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Saturday, 19 September 2026, that an Israeli air strike had eliminated senior Hamas commander Muhammad Suleiman Byouk in the southern Gaza Strip. The targeted aerial operation took place on Thursday, 17 September, near the southern city of Khan Younis. According to official military statements, Byouk served as a commander within the military wing of the Hamas organisation, where he directed tactical field operations in southern Gaza.

Role in October 7 Infiltration and Recent Operations

Prior to his elimination, Byouk was directly implicated in cross-border hostile actions against Israel. Military intelligence confirmed that Byouk participated in the 7 October 2023 infiltration into Israeli territory. Furthermore, the IDF reported that throughout the conflict and in recent weeks, Byouk actively planted explosive devices across the Gaza Strip targeting Israeli ground forces. Military spokespersons noted that Byouk was advancing new attacks against military personnel and civilians while attempting to restore Hamas’s operational capabilities, characterising his activities as a systematic violation of ceasefire terms.

Broader Counter-Terror Operations in the Region

Byouk’s elimination marks the latest in a series of targeted IDF strikes aimed at neutralising senior militant leadership across the Palestinian enclave. The operation in Khan Younis followed a joint mission conducted earlier in the week by the IDF and the Shin Bet security agency, which resulted in the death of Rafah Brigade commander Nael Abu Obeid.
