Honolulu: Hawaii is on high alert, now under a full Tsunami Warning, as authorities anxiously await the arrival of the first tsunami wave following a colossal magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The initial impact on Hawaii is estimated for 7:17 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (HST) on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, (10:47 a.m. IST on Wednesday, July 30, 2025)

The powerful and shallow quake, initially reported as 8.0 but quickly upgraded to a staggering 8.8 by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), struck at a depth of approximately 19.3 kilometres (12 miles). Its sheer force has prompted widespread concern across the Pacific, with warnings and advisories extending to Alaska, the U.S. West Coast, and Japan.

For Hawaii, the focus remains sharply on this critical initial wave. The National Weather Service (NWS) has explicitly stated that "if tsunami waves impact Hawaii, the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave is: 7:17 p.m. HST, Tuesday, July 29, 2025." According to reports, residents in coastal and low-lying areas of Hawaii are being urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately. It is crucial for the public to understand that a tsunami is a series of waves, and the initial wave may not necessarily be the largest. The danger can persist for many hours as subsequent waves arrive, potentially bringing extensive flooding, extremely strong and unusual nearshore currents, and debris.
