Elon Musk warns Republicans: Support Trump or face consequences

Des Moines: Billionaire Elon Musk has issued a warning to Republican lawmakers who oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s plans, signaling his intent to play an active role in shaping the political landscape.
After Trump’s victory, Musk announced that his political action committee (PAC) would have a significant role in upcoming primaries. Musk, who purchased Twitter (now X) and rebranded it to promote free speech, has been a vocal supporter of Trump. His backing extends to key Trump policies, including proposed budget cuts through the Department of Government Efficiency.
During a recent visit to Capitol Hill with entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk emphasised accountability in government spending. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene shared insights from their discussions, saying Musk and Ramaswamy talked about creating "naughty and nice lists" for lawmakers based on their voting records.
“Elon and Vivek talked about having a naughty list and a nice list for members of Congress and senators and how we vote and how we're spending the American people's money," said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
Musk’s growing political influence
Within Trump’s inner circle, Musk is seen as a powerful ally. One Trump adviser noted Musk's deep involvement in the campaign and suggested he might pressure hesitant Republicans to align with Trump’s agenda. Despite his shifting political affiliations—he once supported former President Barack Obama—Musk’s resources and influence are now firmly aligned with Trump.
Departing Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump praised Musk’s impact, especially his acquisition of Twitter, which she described as crucial to Trump’s election success. However, she added that Musk likely sees himself as an outsider rather than a politician.
Political investments and future plans
During the campaign, Musk donated $200 million to America PAC, which focused on mobilising Trump voters in key states. He also contributed $20 million to RBG PAC, which ran ads addressing abortion policy under Trump. Musk’s post-election filings revealed his funding for these groups, solidifying his commitment to influencing political outcomes.
Musk plans to keep America PAC active, with hints that he may challenge Republican lawmakers less supportive of Trump. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk has also named potential targets for GOP primaries, underscoring the growing pressure on lawmakers to align with Trump.
Looking ahead
Musk’s influence extends beyond campaigning. Several Musk allies are set to join the incoming Trump administration, including tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, who will lead NASA, and David Sacks, named the White House AI & Crypto Czar.
Political analysts believe Musk could use his PAC to support Trump’s agenda by targeting moderate Democrats in key states and districts, pushing them to break with their party. Republican strategist Chris Pack warned against overly pressuring GOP lawmakers, cautioning that it could backfire in some districts.
