Vatican City: US Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as new pope. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV.

White smoke billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel has signalled the election of a new pope, prompting jubilant scenes in St Peter’s Square.

As the smoke began to rise, indicating that the cardinals had reached a decision, a wave of applause and cheers erupted from the waiting crowd gathered outside the Vatican. Moments later, the bells of St Peter’s Basilica rang out, confirming the successful conclusion of the papal conclave.

The centuries-old tradition of releasing white smoke – created by burning the ballots of the final vote – marks the moment the Roman Catholic Church’s next leader is chosen. Details of the newly elected pontiff, including his name and chosen papal title, was announced from the balcony of the basilica.

The election comes at a pivotal time for the Church, with faithful around the world watching closely as the new pope prepares to step into one of the most influential roles in global religious life.
