Who is Satish Sanpal, the Class 8 dropout whose UAE assets have been frozen?

A businessman once celebrated for turning a failed grocery shop into a multi-billion-dollar business empire is now at the centre of a money laundering investigation in the UAE.
The UAE's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has ordered a temporary freeze on the financial assets and digital wallets of Dubai-based Indian-origin businessman Satish Sanpal, who also appears in Netflix's 'Desi Bling'.
The action forms part of an ongoing money laundering probe and covers not only Sanpal's personal accounts but also those linked to his wife, Tabinda, and several companies associated with the family.
According to the FIU communication, banks, financial institutions and virtual asset service providers (VASPs) have been instructed to immediately freeze any funds, deposits, investments and deny access to safe deposit boxes connected to the individuals and entities named in the order.
The companies listed in the notice include ANAX Capital Asset Management Company, ANAX Capital Financial Markets LLC, ANAX Holding FZCO and SSB Bazaar General Trading LLC, which reportedly operates in the precious stones business.
Under UAE regulations, the freeze remains valid for 30 days unless the FIU secures an extension with the explicit approval of the country's Attorney General.
It was not immediately known whether Sanpal was in the UAE when the directive was issued, and he could not be reached for comment.
Who is Satish Sanpal?
Originally from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, the 41-year-old entrepreneur left school after Class VIII. At just 15, he opened a grocery shop with Rs 50,000 provided by his mother, though the business shut down within two years.
Around 11 years ago, he moved to the UAE, initially helping clients connect with stock market brokers before expanding into technology, real estate, media and hospitality ventures. He later built partnerships with major hotel chains, significantly growing his business footprint.
In 2018, Sanpal founded ANAX Holding, a conglomerate reportedly valued at around $3 billion. The group includes ANAX Developments, ANAX Hospitality and ANAX Capital.
He is also reported to have made substantial gains by investing in undervalued Dubai properties during the Covid-19 pandemic and owns a mansion in Dubai Hills estimated to be worth $120 million. Sanpal is also reported to reside in the Burj Khalifa.
Earlier this year, the Delhi High Court observed that Sanpal had been 'prematurely labelled' a culprit in media reports despite the official investigation still being underway.
Sanpal has been married to Tabinda for nine years, and the couple has a daughter. He also has two sons from his previous marriage.
