Odisha’s ambitious expansion plan with Paradip Greenfield Airport and statewide connectivity boost

In a decisive move to enhance its aviation infrastructure, the Odisha government has unveiled plans for a new greenfield airport in Paradip, alongside accelerated development of the Shree Jagannath International Airport (SJIA) in Puri and the construction of heliports across 15 districts. These initiatives were announced during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhavan.

The proposed greenfield airport in Paradip aims to bolster regional connectivity, particularly benefiting the industrial and maritime sectors in the port town. This development is expected to facilitate economic growth and improve access to the eastern coastal region.

The Chief Minister also emphasised the need to expedite the SJIA project in Puri, recognising its significance in enhancing connectivity to the prominent pilgrimage and tourist destination. The advancement of this project is anticipated to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and support the state's tourism sector.

Statewide heliport network infrastructure upgrades

In a broader strategy to improve intra-state air connectivity, the government plans to construct heliports in 15 districts. Additionally, discussions included the development of the Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre at the Birashole airstrip in Dhenkanal, with the Public Works Department designated as the nodal agency to oversee and expedite these projects.

The meeting also addressed the upgradation of existing airports, including Rourkela Airport, and the enhancement of regional airstrips at locations such as Jeypore, Dandabose, Rangeilunda, Gotama, Satibhata, Raisuan, Tushara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road, and Utkela. These efforts aim to strengthen regional connectivity and support economic development across the state.

Going ahead, Chief Minister Majhi reiterated the state's commitment to developing world-class aviation infrastructure, encompassing airports, heliports, and drone hubs. He directed officials to focus on modernising public airports, enhancing flight connectivity, and improving the efficiency of aviation units to meet global standards.

The meeting was attended by key state officials, including Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and principal secretaries from relevant departments, reflecting a coordinated approach to advancing Odisha's aviation sector.

These comprehensive initiatives underscore Odisha's strategic focus on transforming its aviation landscape to support economic growth, improve accessibility, and position the state as a significant player in the national aviation network.
