IndiGo expands to Europe via Mumbai, connects over 50 Indian cities

IndiGo Airlines is set to redefine international travel for Indian passengers with a bold expansion strategy that positions Mumbai as a key hub for Europe-bound flights. With the launch of new international services to Amsterdam, Manchester, London, and more, IndiGo is connecting over 50 Indian cities to Europe via seamless one-stop routes, simplifying long-haul travel for passengers across the country.
This strategic initiative marks a significant milestone in IndiGo’s international ambitions, particularly in making long-distance travel more accessible to travelers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities like Patna, Jaipur, Surat, and Lucknow. By leveraging its vast domestic network, IndiGo is providing smoother connectivity and shorter layovers to underserved markets, enabling passengers to reach European destinations without the need for multiple, complex transit points.
Through this model, passengers flying from smaller cities can now reach Europe with a single ticket, through check-in for baggage, and layovers under five hours, making the overall journey more affordable and convenient. The move not only simplifies travel logistics but also enhances travel time and comfort, especially for families, business travelers, and students.
According to IndiGo’s management, Mumbai will now serve as the airline’s principal hub for Europe and West Asia, while Delhi is expected to anchor Central Asian routes, as part of IndiGo’s broader network strategy. This shift also helps the airline avoid routing through politically sensitive or restricted airspaces, such as Pakistani or West Asian zones, ensuring more predictable and uninterrupted flight schedules.
At the core of this expansion is IndiGo’s vision to create metro-based aviation hubs that serve as global connectors. CEO Pieter Elbers recently highlighted that India’s geographic location within a 5–6-hour flying radius of over 65% of the world’s population, offers a strategic advantage in global aviation. IndiGo is actively tapping into this potential by aligning its operations around major Indian metros to serve global travel corridors more efficiently.
Looking ahead to FY 2025, IndiGo plans to add 10 new international destinations to its network. These include key European cities such as Copenhagen and Athens, as well as growing aviation hubs in Cambodia and the CIS region. As part of its global strategy, IndiGo has also forged codeshare partnerships with international giants like Air France-KLM, Delta Air Lines, and Virgin Atlantic, allowing its passengers access to over 30 additional cities across Europe and North America.
This expansion significantly elevates IndiGo’s competitive standing against traditional full-service airlines like Air India and global network carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, especially on high-demand routes between India and Europe or the US. By offering a mix of affordability, simplicity, and reach, IndiGo is emerging as a credible alternative for international travelers seeking value without compromising on connectivity.
To celebrate this expansion, IndiGo has rolled out a special Monsoon Sale from June 24 to 29, offering attractive fares on both domestic and international routes. One-way domestic flights start at just INR 1,499, while international flights begin at INR 4,399. The airline is also offering discounts on its premium economy “IndiGoStretch” seats, with fares from INR 9,999. In addition, travelers can avail up to 50% off on ancillary services, including prepaid excess baggage, seat selection, and priority boarding under its Fast Forward services.
By building seamless, one-stop international connections out of Mumbai, IndiGo is not only empowering passengers from smaller cities but also positioning India as a more integrated player in the global aviation network. As air travel demand continues to surge, especially for leisure and business routes to Europe, IndiGo’s strategic move could set a new benchmark in how low-cost carriers enable cross-continental mobility at scale.
IndiGo’s decision to anchor its Europe-bound services through Mumbai and tie in over 50 Indian cities into this network is a game-changing development for international air travel from India. It opens new doors for millions of passengers, eliminates long detours and multiple transit points, and significantly improves affordability. With an aggressive global roadmap, new partnerships, and a clear hub strategy, IndiGo is poised to become a powerful force in shaping India’s aviation future, not just domestically, but on the world stage.
