Why Gold remains a preferred investment
Gold has long been considered a preferred investment during periods of economic and financial uncertainty. Its reputation as a safe-haven asset has strengthened over the years, particularly since the global financial crisis of 2008–09.
Beyond its traditional role as jewellery, gold has increasingly become an investment option for individuals and institutional investors. It can offer long-term value while helping diversify portfolios and cushion the impact of volatility in equity markets.
Gold is also widely viewed as a hedge against inflation and currency depreciation. Its liquidity makes it an attractive asset during turbulent market conditions, especially when equities and debt markets come under pressure.
India has a strong affinity for gold and remains one of the world's largest consumers of the precious metal. Its dual role as both an investment asset and a luxury commodity continues to drive demand, keeping gold an important part of many Indian households' financial and cultural landscape.
Why gold is used in electronics
Gold is widely used in electronic devices because of its unique properties, particularly its resistance to corrosion and tarnishing. These qualities make it suitable for components that need to maintain reliable electrical connections over long periods.
Electronic devices typically operate at low voltages, where corrosion or tarnishing of contact surfaces can affect performance. Gold helps reduce these problems and can improve the durability and reliability of electronic components.
The metal is commonly used in connectors, switches, relays and connecting strips. Gold can also be found in everyday electronic products such as mobile phones, calculators, GPS devices and televisions, although it is generally used in very small quantities.
One concern with gold used in electronics is that it can be difficult to recover and recycle from discarded devices. While the amount of gold in an individual electronic product is small, the cumulative loss can become significant as electronic waste increases.
However, the use of gold in electronics is relatively small compared with other sources of demand and, by itself, does not have a major impact on gold prices in India.
