108 ambulance staff help woman during childbirth

Alappuzha: "I was in severe labour pain and couldn't hire any auto at the time. By the time, 108 ambulance arrived, it was time for delivery. Sarath acted like a God and saved my baby and me," said Komalapuram native Sheeba Jerin who gave birth to her baby in ambulance the other day.

The doctor had marked September 6 as the possible date of delivery for Sheeba. But she experienced labour pain on Tuesday by 12.30 early morning. Her husband Jerin, elder daughter Sara and mother-in-law only were with her at the time. The auto rickshaws could not reach on time as they had to pass through containment zones.

When Jerin called 108 ambulance, they reached within 15 minutes. But she could not be taken to the hospital in that state. With this, the emergency technician Sarath Krishna and driver Ruban Mendes handled the situation. It was Sarath who helped Sheeba deliver the baby safely. He also cut the umbilical cord and placed clamps on it. Both mother and baby are safe now.

Sarath and Ruban

When asked about the incident, Sarath said that he had no choice but to take the baby out at that time to save their lives. He has only seen childbirth during work experience in Bengaluru for 6 years. He said that he only thought about saving the mother and baby after seeing the helpless faces of her family.

After the delivery, Sarath and Ruban took the mother and baby to Kadappuram hospital. The doctors opined that Sarath's presence of mind to use the temporary clamps to avoid bleeding even when actual clips were not available should be really appreciated.
