Elderly woman trampled to death by wild jumbo in Idukki

Adimaly: In yet another wild elephant attack, an elderly woman was trampled to death at Kanjiraveli in Adimaly Panchayat here on Monday. The deceased was identified as Indira Ramakrishnan (65) of Mundon House.
The tragic incident occurred at around 7 am on Monday. Indira was chasing away the jumbo which entered her premises when it attacked her violently.
She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Kothamangalam. However, her life could not be saved. The body is kept at the mortuary of the hospital for further procedures.
Three wild elephants were sighted near Indira’s premises on Monday morning out of which two went back to forest when she chased them. However, the remaining one came charging towards her and entered the premises. The rubber tappers who witnessed the horrific incident said Indira could not run to safety as she had issues on her leg. Although they came running to rescue Indira, the wild jumbo had trampled her to death.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that Indira was taken to the hospital only after one and a half hours of the incident.
Many leave home for safer places
Kanjiraveli shares a border with Malayattoor Reserve in Ernakulam district. Local people alleged the presence of wild elephants in the area for the past few days. Population is very low in the area as many had left the place owing to wild animal attacks.
Wild elephants are seen crossing the Koch-Dhanushkodi national highways even during the day time. They are shooed away jointly by the local people and the Forest Department’s Rapid Response Team.
Locals to block Neriamangalam Range Office
Meanwhile, local people have decided to block the Neriamangalam Range Office while bringing Indira’s body after post-mortem.
