Munnar (Idukki): Two workers were injured in a wild elephant attack in Munnar on Wednesday morning. The victims, Azhakamma, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, and Sekhar from Nettikudi, were attacked near the waste management centre at Kallar, Nallathanni, just as they were about to start their work shifts.

The incident occurred around 9 am when two wild elephants approached the workers at the entrance of the plant. Reports indicate that one of the elephants, separated from its herd, attacked Azhakamma and Sekhar.

Azhakamma sustained serious injuries to her head and leg after being lifted by the trunk of the elephant and gored with its tusk; her condition is critical. She is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Munnar but is expected to be transferred to Kottayam Medical College for specialised care.

Sekhar also sustained multiple injuries across his body but is in a less serious condition. Other workers at the scene managed to escape the attack, suffering only minor injuries.

Congress protest

In protest against the incident, the Congress party organised a road blockade at Munnar Central Junction. There had been ongoing requests to remove the tusker, which had been sighted near the waste management centre for several days, but no action was taken. Protests are intensifying in the area.
