Wayanad landslide: Evacuation efforts face dual challenges of road collapse, communication problems

Kalpetta: The Mundakkai region of Wayanad has been completely isolated following landslides, leaving rescue workers unable to reach the severely affected area. Although reports indicate that a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has arrived, locals say evacuating people by road will be challenging.
The main obstacle to reaching Mundakkai is the complete collapse of the bridge. About 250 people are reportedly trapped in the area, with several houses washed away. Four staff quarters in the estate were also destroyed, affecting 65 families. Additionally, 35 estate workers are missing.
Challenging rescue operations
District Panchayat President Samshad Maraikkar told Mathrubhumi News that the primary challenge is accessing Mundakkai, as it is not reachable by road and communication is difficult. "Efforts are being made to rope the NDRF team members to Mundakkai. Evacuation by road is also not possible; a temporary bridge must be constructed, or airlifting must be considered," he said.
"Chooralmala has also suffered consequential damage, and rescue operations are underway. Many houses have been washed away. Several people, including two foreigners staying at a homestay, have been rescued. Rescue workers are currently checking all the houses to determine if anyone is trapped," he added.
Army sent to Wayanad
The army has been deployed to the landslide-hit areas of Wayanad for rescue operations. About 150 soldiers from Kannur, equipped with necessary gear, have left for Wayanad. The revenue department and police are accompanying the army. This team previously carried out rescue operations in Kavalappara and Puthumala.
