Wayanad landslide: Emergency aid for pet and livestock losses announced

Kochi: Kerala Minister of Animal Husbandry, J Chinchurani has announced emergency assistance for residents who have lost their pets and livestock in Mundakkai and Chooralmala. Speaking at a meeting with high-level officials at the Collectorate, the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister outlined the relief measures.
The minister said that district dairy organisations should lead the relief efforts and provide fodder to those in need. Separate funds will be allocated for feed and medicine. Fodder will be sourced from nearby districts, and the ban on milk and feed imports from Karnataka will be lifted.
A control room has been established to manage the disposal of deceased animals and relocate the rest. Cows will be provided to the impoverished at a 95 percent subsidy. Post-mortems for deceased cows will also be waived to provide compensations.
Meanwhile, the army says that Chooralmala is one of the biggest disasters in the country so far in terms of range and death toll. Kerala-Karnataka Sub-Area General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General Vinod Mathew told 'Mathrubhumi' that even in Uttarakhand, which is prone to frequent disasters and landslides, not so many people have died.
