WATCH: Mime on Kerala nuns’ arrest staged at Irinjalakuda St Thomas Cathedral on Independence Day

Irinjalakuda: Echoing the diocese’s firm stance on the issue, the St Thomas Cathedral, the principal parish of the Irinjalakuda Diocese, staged a powerful mime performance on Independence Day, centred on the arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh. Drawing from real events, the act highlighted the trauma and injustice faced by the Catholic nuns.
The performance comes at a time when the Irinjalakuda Diocese has taken a critical position against both the Central and Chhattisgarh governments.

The diocese’s response also follows a recent controversy over remarks made by Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany, who had credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Central Government for facilitating the nuns' release on bail.
In response, Irinjalakuda Bishop Mar Pauly Kannookadan clarified that personal opinions should not be mistaken as the official position of the Catholic Church. He emphasised that while the Church has a defined political outlook, it does not align with any political party.
The mime aligns with the diocese’s continued protest campaign, which has included pastoral letters and public rallies demanding the withdrawal of the charges and action against those responsible for the incident. The artistic portrayal at the Cathedral served both as a tribute to the nuns’ resilience and a symbolic call for justice.
