Vallyayi (Kannur): In the Vishnupriya murder case, accused Shyamjith has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Thalassery Additional District Court. Apart from the lifer, he has also been sentenced to an additional 10-year jail term and slapped with a fine of Rs 2 lakh by Thalassery Additional District Court (1) Judge A V Mridula.

The court granted life term to Shyamjith (28) of Thazhekalathil House at Manantheri for murder of Vishnupriya, and additonal 10-year jail term and fine for breaking into her house.

The court had found him guilty and convicted him under Sections 302 (murder) and 449 (house-trespass) on Saturday. Prosecution had produced CCTV footage showing the accused buying the murder weapon, a hammer, from a shop in Koothuparamba two days prior to the incident.

The gruesome incident took place on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 12 noon. Shyamjith, who was in relationship with the victim, broke into her house, slit her throat and cut her veins in Vallyayi near Panoor out of enmity as she had withdrawn from their relationship.

Vishnupriya, who had been working as a pharmacist at a clinic in Panoor, was on leave following her grandmother's demise when the brutal incident took place.

All her relatives were present at her grandmother's place which is nearby her house for the rituals. They rushed to her house on hearing the screams of one of her relative who had gone to meet her. They found Vishnupriya with about 29 wounds in her body.

Shyamjith had fled the scene and hid at his residence. However, the police tracked him using the mobile tower data and arrested him.

Vishnupriya is survived by her siblings Vipin, Vismaya and Arun.
